Seen of devastation, landslide in Afghanistan buried part of a village killing at least 2100 people with 1000’s still missing. Officials say now they have given hope finding any survivors and concern about putting thousands of homeless and rescue workers are at risk. People are using anything they can dig and search 100 meters of mud. These distress villagers say everyone is trapped here. The landslide triggered by heavy rain destroyed 100’s of homes and has left people desperate need of water, medical support, and emergency shelter. As the heavy rain damaged so many roads, rescue teams have not flown to the area for help.
The landslide killed everyone it trapped almost instantly, a handful of people caught by the edge of its fury managed to keep their heads and upper bodies free and are being treated in nearby hospitals. The aid on offer is basic and limited to the worst-affected. Many villagers said they felt abandoned despite a flying visit by a vice-president and half a dozen senior ministers to investigate the scale of the disaster. Dirty and exhausted refugees from the landslide filed up the rolling hill leading out of town looking for help, or headed up to tents on the hillside, terrified of further deaths.
